Ford Coolant Service

Coolant Car Check
You may have heard the term “coolant” before, but what exactly is this liquid, and what function does it serve to your Ford vehicle? Coolant is the fluid inside your engine that transfers heat and regulates the engine’s temperature for different moving parts. Coolant has an additive that allows it to avoid freezing below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and avoid overheating above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Not having enough coolant in your vehicle can cause your engine to overheat, which can lead to serious problems while driving on the St Cloud roads. Learn how to check coolant levels in your Ford vehicle with the service team at Morrie's Buffalo Ford. For all of your Ford coolant service needs rely on the experts here at the Morrie's Buffalo Ford.

How to Check Coolant Levels in Your Ford

Checking coolant levels is one of the easiest ways to keep up with your recommended Ford maintenance schedule, and you don’t have to be a mechanical expert to do so. Make sure your vehicle has enough coolant, follow these steps:

  1. Park your vehicle, and shut off the engine. You’ll want to be sure that the engine has cooled down since it can be dangerous to open the hood while the engine is hot. Wait about 10 to 15 minutes before opening your hood and checking the coolant levels.
  2. Once the engine has cooled down, locate the coolant reservoir. If you can’t find the coolant reservoir, consult your owner’s manual to find its specific location.
  3. Once you find the coolant reservoir, check the markings on the side of the reservoir container. If the liquid inside the reservoir is at the “full” marking, then you have enough coolant.
  4. If the liquid in your reservoir container is below the “full” line, then you’ll need to take off the radiator cap and add coolant with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Be sure to read the bottle to see if it’s premixed and that you’re using the right kind of coolant.

While you’re checking your coolant levels, be sure to also check the reservoir container and any hoses for cracks and other damages.

How Often to Check Ford Coolant

Your coolant levels will go down the more you drive your car around Rockford, which is why it’s important to check your fluid levels often. The general guideline is to check your coolant levels every three to six months. Normally, coolant is blue, green, yellow, or red depending on the vehicle you drive. If you notice that your fluid has a brown color, no color at all, or has a sludgy texture, then you’ll want to have the coolant system flushed and have the coolant replaced immediately.

When to Change Ford Coolant

For most Ford vehicles, it’s recommended that you should have the coolant changed every 30,000 miles or about every two years. However, this number can vary depending on the vehicle you drive, the type of coolant you need, your specific driving habits around Monticello, and other factors. So, it’s important to consult your owner’s manual to see how often you’ll need to change your coolant.

Sometimes, you may need to have your coolant changed prematurely. Here are some signs that you may need to have your coolant changed sooner than normal:

  • Your check engine light is on.
  • You notice a burning smell from the hood.
  • You see steam coming from the hood.
  • Coolant is leaking from your vehicle.
  • A grinding noise is coming from the engine.

If you notice any of these signs, then schedule service with our team at Morrie's Buffalo Ford immediately.
